Grass-Fed and Pasture-Raised

Two phrases that often appear side by side, and describe two different things. One is about what an animal ate. The other is about where it lived.

One term is about the diet.
The other is about the ground.

Both describe how an animal was kept: the feed, and the ground.

I Two terms, not one

Two separate statements

Grass-fed and pasture-raised are two different statements about two different things, and an animal can meet one without meeting the other.

Grass-fed is about diet. It describes cattle whose feed is forage: grass and other growing plants, rather than a grain-based ration. It is a statement about what went into the animal.

Pasture-raised is about place. It describes cattle kept outdoors on open land for their living conditions. It is a statement about where the animal spent its life.

The two frequently travel together, because cattle on open pasture tend to eat what grows there. But they answer different questions, and reading them as one collapses information that was deliberately stated separately.
