In 1950, an estimated twenty-three thousand people worldwide had reached their hundredth birthday. Today the United Nations places that figure in the high hundreds of thousands, and still rising. Here is what the data actually shows.

A number that used to stand still.
Reaching 100 was once treated as remarkable enough to mark with a formal letter from a head of state. For most of recorded history, the number of people alive past their hundredth year changed so slowly across a single lifetime that it barely registered as a trend at all.
That changed inside a single century. Global life expectancy has climbed steadily since the early 1900s, and the number of people reaching 100 has grown with it, not gradually, but at a pace that surprises most people the first time they see the figures laid out in sequence.
The shift raises an obvious question, and a harder one behind it. How many people actually live past 100 today, and how quickly is that number moving. The answer is better documented than most longevity statistics, because centenarians are, by definition, counted one birthday at a time.
What follows is a reading of the numbers themselves: where they started, where the United Nations and national statistics agencies place them today, and where those same agencies expect them to land by the middle of this century.

What actually counts.
A centenarian is, by definition, anyone who has reached the age of 100. A smaller and much rarer group, supercentenarians, refers to those who reach 110, a threshold uncommon enough that researchers can name most of the people alive at any given time who have crossed it. A closer look at that outer edge, and at who holds the verified record for the longest documented life, is its own separate piece worth reading on its own terms.
The distinction matters because the two figures tell different stories. Centenarians are becoming common enough to reshape actuarial tables and retirement planning. Supercentenarians remain rare enough that each verified case is still individually documented and cross-checked.
That word, verified, is doing real work in demographic research. Birth registration was inconsistent or absent in many parts of the world a century ago, and researchers studying regions with unusually high reported rates of extreme age have raised questions about how many of those ages can be confirmed against an original record.
This is not a reason to discount the overall trend. Global life expectancy gains are well documented through multiple independent data sources. But it is a reason the most careful demographers treat any single regional claim with more caution than the headline number it produces.

Where the count concentrates.
Centenarians are not distributed evenly. The 2020 United States census recorded 80,139 people aged 100 or older, a fifty percent increase from the 53,364 counted just a decade earlier in 2010, making centenarians one of the fastest-growing age groups the census tracks.
Japan reports the highest rate of centenarians relative to population size of any country, and its government has tracked the figure closely enough to mark it as a matter of public record each year. A handful of other regions, in Europe and elsewhere, report similarly elevated concentrations.
The reasons behind that geographic clustering, diet, daily movement, social structure, and genetics among them, are the subject of a separate body of research in their own right, worth a closer look on its own terms rather than folded into a population count.

The odds, recalculated.
A generation ago, reaching 100 was treated statistically as an outlier event, something closer to a lottery than a plannable outcome. That framing no longer matches the data.
The UK Office for National Statistics projects that roughly one in three babies born today in the UK, about 35 percent of girls and 28 percent of boys, will live to see their hundredth birthday. Comparable projections exist for other countries with similar life expectancy trends.
That is a markedly different statistic than the one that applies to someone already in mid-life today, since decades of past medical and lifestyle exposure narrow the odds considerably compared with a birth-year projection. But it marks a real shift in how demographers now describe the likelihood of an unusually long life, from remarkable exception toward a plausible, if still uncommon, outcome.

Reading the curve forward.
A rising count is not, on its own, a story about any individual life. It is a population-level statistic, shaped by public health infrastructure, medical care, and living conditions across entire generations, not by any single choice.
What it does establish is that living past 100 has moved from a statistical rarity toward a documented, growing, and increasingly studied outcome, one with enough scale now that researchers can study the populations who reach it in real detail rather than as isolated case studies.
That is the more useful way to read the trend: not as a promise about any one life, but as a growing body of population data describing how much room now exists between an average lifespan and the outer edge of one, and how many more people are living long enough to be studied at that edge.

Where this number fits.
