Long before computing, hardware meant metal goods: tools, locks, hinges, the sturdy objects sold in a hardware store. When the first computers arrived, engineers reached for the old word to name the physical machine. The suffix was already there, waiting.
1958 · Software
The invisible half gets a name.
In 1958, the statistician John W. Tukey put the word software into print, giving a name to the instructions that ran on the machine. The coinage did more than describe a technology; it made an entire invisible layer of the world discussable. Naming, it turns out, is a form of seeing.
The Decades After · The Family Grows
Firmware, middleware, and the layers between.
Once the pattern existed, the vocabulary kept extending it. Firmware named the code fixed inside the machine. Middleware named the connective layer between systems. Shareware and freeware named ways of passing programs along. Each coinage followed the same logic: find a layer, give it a name, and the layer becomes something people can build on.
The Near Miss · Wetware
The word that almost got there.
Writers of fiction and engineers trading jokes coined wetware for the human brain, casting biology as one more component beside the chips. It was clever, and it was backwards. It described the person in the machine's terms. The living layer deserved a word of its own, on its own terms.

Hardware was never about computers.
The oldest word in the family predates every machine it now describes. For centuries, hardware meant the durable goods of daily life: nails, hinges, locks, kettles, the honest metal objects a household is held together with. The hardware store came long before the hard drive.
Computing did not invent the word. It borrowed it. When the first electronic machines needed a name for their physical selves, engineers reached backward into the language of workshops and toolboxes. It was a fitting inheritance: the new machines were, after all, the ironmongery of a new age.
That borrowing set the pattern for everything that followed. The suffix -ware, which had quietly organized the material world for generations, was about to be asked to organize the immaterial one.
Software: the coinage that made a century legible.
By the late 1950s, the machines existed but half of their reality had no name. The instructions, the routines, the logic that made the metal useful: all of it was discussed in awkward phrases, because the vocabulary had not caught up with the invention.
Then, in 1958, the statistician John W. Tukey used the word software in print, and the awkwardness ended. The coinage was almost mischievous in its simplicity: if the machine is hard, the instructions are soft. Yet its effect was profound. An invisible layer of the world became visible, discussable, and eventually the defining project of an era.
There is a lesson in that moment which reaches far beyond computing. A layer of reality can exist for years, doing essential work, and still go untended simply because no one has named it. The right word does not just describe. It organizes attention.
The Missing Word

Why the last word took the longest.
It is a strange fact of the vocabulary that the newest word in the family names the oldest layer in the stack. Hardware is decades old as a machine and centuries old as a word. The living layer is nearly four billion years old, and it received its name last.
The reason is that a word arrives when a layer becomes practicable. Software could not be named until there were instructions worth naming. The living layer could not be named as a daily practice until biology became readable, measurement moved from the clinic to the wrist, and the science of healthy aging became something an individual could follow from a kitchen counter.
