If types describe the molecule, sources describe the harvest. A multi collagen formula draws on some combination of bovine hide, bovine bone broth, poultry bone broth, fish skin and scale, and eggshell membrane. Each is a food material with its own supply chain, processing method and regulatory language, which is why terms like grass-fed and pasture-raised appear on a collagen container at all. They are statements about farming, not about molecules.

The two lists do not map cleanly onto each other, and a formula is not being evasive when it declines to draw the lines. No manufacturer synthesises it. It is drawn from tissue that already contains it, and the tissue decides which types come with it.

What hydrolyzed actually describes.

A second word sits alongside the first on a multi collagen container, and it describes something different again. Hydrolysis breaks long collagen chains into shorter fragments. Hydrolyzed collagen and collagen peptides are two names for the same processing step, applied after extraction and before the material is dried into powder.

The words describe molecular weight, nothing else. That is why hydrolyzed material dissolves in a cold drink while gelatin, which is the same protein less thoroughly broken down, sets into a gel instead. None of this changes what the types are. Hydrolysis is a mechanical description of how far a protein has been broken down, and type is a classification of which protein it was to begin with. A third independent axis, running alongside the other two.

What the count does not tell you.

The temptation with a five-type list is to run the mapping backwards: to take each named type, find the tissue it is most abundant in, and read the list as a set of destinations. Type II is in cartilage, therefore the chicken source is the joint one. Type I is in skin, therefore the bovine source is the skin one. It is a tidy story and it is not how ingestion works. Collagen taken by mouth is broken down into amino acids and short peptides before absorption. It does not arrive in tissue as the type it left the tub as.

This is where the reading most often goes wrong. The types a formula names describe the composition of its raw material. They are a statement about what went in, documented honestly, in the same way an ingredient list on a loaf documents the flour. They are not a routing table. A formula naming five types is describing the amino acid and peptide profile of five raw materials rather than one, which is a statement about composition. Assigning each type a destination is not.

What a five-type blend describes is breadth of raw material, drawn from five foods rather than one. Composition is the one thing a formula can state about itself with certainty, and stating it plainly is the useful thing to do. Everything past composition belongs to research.
